Yet Berlin truly is an amazing city to visit in the summer, even just for a weekend. This city is incredible and offers something for all types of travellers, from culture, outdoor spots to nightlife.
Flights to Berlin are affordable all year round with low cost European airlines, and also there are so many places to stay in Berlin with options for all budgets.
There are so many events and things to do in Berlin during summer, here are some of my top recommendations and places to check out.
1. Walk Along the River Spree
If you are fortunate to have good sunny weather, I would recommend a walk along the Spree, Berlin’s beautiful river. In the summer there are deckchairs positioned along the edge of the river, which is the perfect place to sample some local beers, so it is a good idea to keep your passport with you for ID when purchasing drinks.
2. River Cruise
Another way to experience the beautiful river Spree is to go on a river cruise, which is an incredibly relaxing way to watch the sunset and enjoy some German beer.
There are so many great places to enjoy food in Berlin, with foods from different cultures available across the city. Lots of Germany tour operators offer cruises and sightseeing trips which can be booked online on in Berlin.
3. Wander the City Centre & Get Wonderfully Lost
Just walking the streets of Berlin when the weather is good, taking in the city and people watching is a special experience.
When walking around the streets of Berlin you will have ample opportunities to see Ampelmännchen, the green and red traffic light men, which are beloved symbol in Eastern Germany.
It is illegal to cross German pedestrian crossings when the red pedestrian light is shown, so make sure you check out the local laws and customs of Germany before arriving to make sure you don’t break any laws.
You might also want to learn some useful German phrases for tourists which will help interacting or navigating the city.
4. Marvel at the Architecture
The architecture and history on offer in Berlin is truly incredible, with the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate within a short distance from each other.
5. Hire a Bike & See the Sights
You can hire a bike, which is a great way to experience the beauty of the city, but make sure you’ve not had too much to drink as there can be serious consequences!
7. Charlottenburg Palace
A little bit outside of the city is Charlottenburg Palace, surrounded by beautiful gardens and a lake. You can pay an admission fee to explore some of the interior of the palace, but wandering around the grounds is free of charge!
8. Mauerpark
Mauerpark in the summer is simply a must do! Located in the north of Berlin not far from the Gesundbrunnen station, Mauerpark offers a truly alternative Sunday experience.
There is an amazing market set up there, which is the perfect place to buy gifts, souvenirs and try some really tasty food.
It gets pretty busy there on a Sunday as it has become such a popular place for residents and visitors alike, so make sure to keep your belongings close.
Bearpit Karaoke, started almost 10 years ago by Joe Hatchiban, draws thousands of people in to sing and watch for the day, and is such a fun way to spend the afternoon, and maybe even start your singing career!
Go explore Berlin for yourself! Also if Germany does appeal you might like to check out this Hamburg weekend itinerary.
