Tenerife Whale & Dolphin Conservation Placements from £150

Company : Frontier
Countries: Spain / Tenerife
Location : Tenerife
Duration: 1 week to 2 months
Approx Costs: 100 to 1000 £ Pound (UK)

Explore the beautiful island of Tenerife and gain valuable experience in conservation whilst working to protect these majestic species in their natural habitat.

As one of the top whale and dolphin watching destinations in the world, the south-west coast of Tenerife is a truly outstanding location for the observation of free-living whales. There are resident communities of pilot whales and dolphins which remain here throughout the year, which can be observed on perhaps 80% of the days of the year.

This project will give you the perfect opportunity to learn more about these fascinating creatures and gain valuable experience in conservation as you spend your days working alongside the Island’s threatened whale and dolphin populations.

Currently, the whales and dolphins face a number of threats including habitat degradation, injury from ships and commercial fishing equipment, prey depletion caused by overfishing, and noise and health effects resulting from increased in-water pollution rates.

The data you collect will contribute towards the long-term management of the area and assist in promoting marine conservation in the wider region. So if you are a marine life enthusiast and want to contribute to the important work of conservationists in Tenerife, then this is the project for you!

Frontier Tenerife Whale & Dolphin Conservation Placements from £150 Reviews

An eye opening experience

After being given the opportunity of taking part in the Frontier project for the conservation of whales and dolphins in the Canary Islands, I can say that it has been an amazing experience. It gave me the opportunity to learn new interesting things about the life of these beautiful creatures and gave me a reminder of how important it is to keep the sea protected from any sort of pollution and harm caused by us humans.

While these are the key aspects of the trip, I can also say that that I've met a lot of new people that come from all over the world and it was very interesting to see how the different aspects of the project were perceived by people from other countries. And of course it was very good to spend time with them. As well as the upsides, there were also some things which could be improved: the condition of the house in which was suitable for so many volunteers. Also, I believe that the "community" activities (beach cleaning) can be drastically improved by lasting longer and covering a much larger area, therefore giving us volunteers the sense of accomplishment we are all looking for.

Amazing experience

I had the most amazing time when I went in June for two weeks, wish I had stayed longer. As a marine biology student, it was rewarding to know that the work we did will help benefit the local populations of whales and dolphins in the future. There was plenty of time to explore the Island and the local culture. Staff at frontier were so friendly and helpful, even as a mature volunteer I was not treated any differently.
I would highly recommend this trip it to anyone

Thank you Frontier for an amazing trip
