Volunteers Go Vegan – Protecting Farmed Animals in California

As part of this voluntary project you join the experienced team of a non-profit sanctuary to dedicate yourself to the protection of formerly farmed animals.

The special thing about volunteering in this project: To enhance a more conscious, sustainable and animal friendly lifestyle you will live entirely vegan during your time at the sanctuary.

 

Details

Countless animals are being exploited in the food industry each day for the production of milk, meat, eggs and other products. As a volunteer you will be living and working on the grounds of an animal sanctuary in Northern California which is dedicated to ending the exploitation of farmed animals. The facility provides sanctuary to more than 250 pigs, cows, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, sheep and goats.

You will join the animals and the team for several weeks to become familiarize yourself with the operations of a non-profit sanctuary and to learn the behaviour of formerly farmed animals in a sanctuary setting: You assist with daily feeds, clean animal quarters and help maintain sanctuary grounds. You also observe weekly animal health checks as needed and help socialise animals.

As factory farming is a synonym for neglect and cruelty, all sanctuary staff members promote a vegan lifestyle. You are asked to not bring any animal-based foods to the sanctuary and only shop vegan products at the supermarket while you are part of the project. Medications you require are permitted of course.

 

Accommodation

Volunteers in a guest house on the animal shelter site. The house has three shared bedrooms, two communal bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a living area with a TV and DVD player. It also has central heat and air as well as access to the internet. Mobile reception is limited but available. In the kitchen volunteers can prepare their daily meals – it is the volunteers' responsibility to purchase food items, though.
