Mission
The mission of the Odiyan Retreat Center is twofold: to assist in the protection, preservation and flourishing of all Buddhist cultures in Asia and to model as a living experiment the integration of Buddhist principles and Western thought through work and a lifestyle which is dedicated to the benefit of our planet and all humanity.
Modeled after Tibet's first monastery—a three-dimensional mandala—Odiyan Retreat Center is situated on one thousand acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean about 110 miiles north of San Francisco. Under the guidance of Ven. Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche for almost forty years, Odiyan is dedicated to the preservation of Buddhist lineage teachings, sacred art and literature; and to the transmission of this enlightened knowledge to the Western world.
Participation at Odiyan is a wholesome and active lifestyle engaging body, mind and spirit in a healthy setting of nature, wide open spaces, sacred beauty, fresh air, clean water, nutritious food. One need not be Buddhist or have any religious affiliation to apply to live and work at Odiyan.
Odiyan is a community of about forty resident volunteers from 23 to 70 years of age, primarily from North America and Europe, in residence from six months to over 35 years. We are currently seeking resident male volunteers who are eager for an outdoor life style, manual physical work, a challenging schedule and community involvement.
