The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) are responsible for disaster management in Jamaica. Volunteers will work within this agency and with regional coordinators to assist with plans to mitigate and respond to all types of disaster.

A big part of the volunteer role is to help with educating communities, schools and businesses about disaster management through the Community Disaster Management Project (Operation Get Ready). The project aims to engage the most vulnerable communities in a preparedness campaign, decrease the damage which results from natural disasters, and to increase the knowledge of the community members with regards to natural disasters.

Tasks volunteers may be involved in include:

- Public education awareness campaigns
- Helping to train teachers, students and community groups in basic disaster management
- Developing evacuation plans and strategies
- Planning and coordinating workshops
- Developing and implementing basic mitigation projects
