Many children who grow up in the townships of Cape Town have never been to the beach, despite its close proximity, and most are not able to swim. Surfing can be an expensive sport and as such is out of reach of many of these children. This project allows these children to visit the beach, learn to swim and learn to surf - an opportunity they may never have otherwise had.

The project will be based at a surf school in Muizenberg. Volunteers will help out on a morning and afternoon surf session; during these sessions volunteers will be coaching the participants in the water and on the beach under the supervision of a qualified ISA surfing coach. The project works with disadvantaged adults and children, as well as disabled youths, and introduces them to the joys of surfing. Your role as a volunteer is to teach them surfing skills and nurture their abilities, encouraging them all the way.

Volunteers do not need to be experienced surfers, but do need to be strong swimmers. Volunteers can learn to surf on the project, whilst working with at-risk youths from the townships. Friday afternoons are free for volunteers to practice their own surf skills.
