This volunteer project is based in South Africa’s beautiful Eastern Cape and here you will have the chance to work towards the conservation of the famous Big 5. Set on a 7,500-hectare reserve, the project aims to protect all of the animal species present here, from the proud lions through to the delicate antelope and this would not be possible without the help of passionate and dedicated volunteers.
As a volunteer on this project, you will assist with a number of exciting conservation activities, helping out with a different task every day. You will have the opportunity to help with crucial maintenance tasks around the reserve, pay a visit to a community centre to meet the local children, and even camp out under the African night sky!
This project is perfect if you are looking to make a hands-on difference whilst being immersed in the majesty of the African bush.
Itinerary
Day 1
After arriving at the project site, you will be given time to settle in and meet your fellow volunteers before tucking into dinner.
Day 2-14
These are your project days. You will begin activities at around 7.30am and return to the volunteer house at 4pm. Days are jam-packed so make sure you rest up during your free time on the project!
Day 15
Unfortunately, today is your last day and after you’ve said your goodbyes you will return to the airport to head back home or begin your onward travel plans.
Project Activities
Game Drives
Head out on game drives, keeping your eyes peeled and making observations of the incredible wildlife surrounding you.
Reserve Maintenance
A reserve of this size needs a lot of maintenance, so helping with tasks such as fence repair and ensuring the roads are still okay for the project vehicles to drive on could be on the agenda.
Game Capture
Sometimes reserve animals need medical assistance or relocating to another part of the reserve. You may have the chance to help with this exciting procedure if an animal is in need. Please note that this is not a guaranteed activity.
A Night At The Luxury Lodge
During your stay on this project, you will have the chance to spend a night in the 4 Star luxury lodge, relaxing in style before heading out again the following day. Please note that this is only included in your fee if you volunteer for two weeks or more.
Visiting a Local Community Centre
Spend some time with the local children, playing games with them and testing your football skills!
Bush Camp Outs and Night Drives
As well as heading out on a night drive to try and spot some nocturnal wildlife, you may be able to sleep out in the African bush if weather allows.
Alien Plant Control
Alien plant species become a big problem when impacting on the local ecosystem and eventually affecting the food chain. You may help to remove invasive plants to ensure the food chain remains in place!
Canoeing and Boating on the Local River
Glide down a beautiful river found on the project site, taking in the views of the local wildlife as you pass.
