WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?
Although English is the national language of Ghana, many Ghanaian children grow up with the local tribal languages of their families, such as Ga, Twi and Ewe. However, to communicate with fellow Ghanaians in education, business, and all official areas of life, they must have a good command of English.
You'll dance, sing, and play games with children as well as teach them English. Literacy is key to education and future jobs for poor children, enabling them to move beyond subsistence farming. Illiterate children have few educational options, and your presence in the school gives them the gift of the language of commerce, allowing them to access stable and secure jobs, and high school and college scholarships.
Many schools in Ghana rely entirely on volunteer support in order to remain operational and your work on a Ghanaian teaching placement will be invaluable in maintaining the ongoing educational opportunities of the local people.
WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
Your work schedule will cover a comprehensive, varied and enjoyable teaching programme in a small local community school, enabling you to engage fully with your pupils and awaken your creativity and initiative.
You will benefit in terms of your personal and professional experience and will be encouraged to formulate ideas and develop your teaching skills and techniques. Working with local teachers and on your own you will be directly involved with marking pupils work, preparing homework and assembling innovative and effective lesson plans.
As well as this you could also get involved with a range of extracurricular activities depending on your personal skills and interests, whether it be helping to direct a school play, organising a choir, or helping select a sports team, just use your initiative and get the kids involved. Whatever you decide, you are sure to gain huge satisfaction from inspiring these underprivileged children, whilst enhancing your own skills and experience significantly.
