How to Save Money on Flights to NYC
There are three airports in the New York area - JFK, La Guardia and Newark which is really located in New Jersey but often gets classed as New York.
Most flights arrive into JFK but if you are looking to save money you could also fly into Newark airport in New Jersey which is about an hour away from Manhattan by bus/taxi and is sometimes cheaper to fly into than JFK.
Flights can be really expensive to New York from Europe, the average price being around £500 (550 Euros) off peak.
Expect to pay more in July and August when there is the school summer holidays, sometimes flights almost double in price do avoid travelling during this period if you are on a budget.
Getting From JFK Airport to Manhattan
From JFK airport you have a number of options for travelling to Manhattan. You can catch a taxi which costs around $55 and this is a flat rate (its always good to give a $5 tip too). Please always catch the official yellow taxis in the rank outside, if someone approached you for a taxi when you are leaving departures please avoid as these will usually charge you are ridiculously high fee.
Getting a taxi might be quite expensive but its a great way to travel and see Manhattan for the first time, nothing beats travelling across one of the connecting bridges from Queens or Brooklyn and seeing the famous skyline for the first time. You can also take the airtrain and then subway, this is a cheap way to travel and costs approx $8. The journey is fairly easy, you can ask staff for advice.
