Lying in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is the collective name for two islands situated 35 km off the coast of mainland Tanzania: Unguja (commonly known as Zanzibar) and Pemba.
Zanzibar means 'Land of Blacks'. It is a combination of two Arabic words, 'Zinj' which means black and 'barr' which means land. The Zanzibar Archipelago consists of 2 major islands and about another 50 smaller islands. Often, many people refer to Unguja, the main and more developed island as Zanzibar. The second largest Island is Pemba.
Zanzibar remains enigmatic in the Indian Ocean with its history of slave trade, war and strife, spice and coconut plantations and a predominantly Islamic culture and religion. Life continues as it always has, still governed by the ocean and its winds, little, almost not at all changed over centuries. It is truly a ‘paradise’.
Accommodation Zanzibar is second to none and there is something for everyone’s budget from tented safaris and lodges to beach huts and luxury boutique hotels.
You could combine your trip with a tour of Tanzania and take a jeep safari to one of the vast national parks. You will see Africa’s big five – lions, buffalo, elephant, rhinoceros and leopard – roaming alongside many more wild animals. Then plan a trip to the exotic island of Zanzibar for the ultimate African holiday.
Spice up your life and go discover Zanzibar for yourself.
