The forest of Fontainebleau is renowned for being the biggest and best bouldering venue in Europe, if not the world. Its mix of atmospheric forest settings, unusual rock formations and acres of sand, sets it miles apart from other climbing venues. However, the key to Fontainebleau’s popularity is its abundance of easily accessible boulders – thousands of them! The forests create a magical, unique and unusual setting for such an adventurous outdoor activity: a peaceful backdrop to simply just enjoy the scenery. Active conservation schemes are also being carried out in this area due to the rich abundance of bird species, mammals and butterflies. Interestingly, it is an area of active erosion, and so boulders are constantly changing shape, making it a site where climbers can return and continually have new experiences, another reason why this destination is so popular.
French alpine climbers have practiced bouldering here since the 19th century and even today it still remains an active sports location. The historical town is located approximately 35 miles south of Paris, a hilly forest full of diversity, culture and boulders. It has continuously remained at the centre of world bouldering since the 1930s, and is within a reachable distance from the UK. It is such an exceptional area exhibiting so many desirable characteristics including excellent soft and sandy landings, a positive and active local environment, historical interests, and a huge potential for development, and yet it is not a well known tourist destination.
This trip is suitable for climbers of all experience levels. If you are travelling from London, the short journey will be fun-filled too, as you get to know and travel along with like-minded individuals.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
Over the three days, you will be spending your time bouldering and climbing. You will get to experience how sandstone boulders are great for climbing, because they are a fantastic quality and make any unfortunate landings soft! The complex manoeuvre of body positions and foot positions means that your success is a result of a physical workout, leaving you surprisingly satisfied and very addicted, even after such a short trip. You’ll also be able to choose a circuit to suit your abilities, with the excitement of changing to a different circuit on day 2. Evenings will be spent relaxing with your group at the campsite.
