Established in 1954, Studio Cambridge is the oldest language school in the city. It is a privately owned, independent school and therefore not part of a large chain. It is renowned for its friendly atmosphere with both students and staff. The school is recognised by the British Council and is a member of English UK. Studio Cambridge is an authorised course centre for the CELTA course. We have had a CELTA teacher training programme for over 20 years and we currently offer intensive, 4-week CELTA courses in February and November each year.
CELTA , the Certificate of English Language teaching to Adults, is awarded by Cambridge English and it is recognised worldwide.
The CELTA course is intensive, running from approximately 0915 to 1730 hours each day, Monday to Friday, with just 90 minutes for morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. The evenings and weekends will be spent on written assignments and on lesson planning.
Assessment on the CELTA course is continuous and integrated. There is no final examination. The assessed components of the course are the teaching practice and the assignments.
Trainees will teach 6 hours over all, spread over two levels – generally Pre-intermediate and Upper Intermediate. Guidance and support will be given, particularly in the early stages, and withdrawn gradually as you become more confident and self-sufficient. Verbal and written feedback will follow each teaching session and you will have an opportunity to reflect on and learn from your own and from others’ performance.
Entry requirements:
• The CELTA qualification is aimed at people with little or no experience of teaching English as a Foreign Language. Some applicants have never taught before, some have limited EFL experience but hold no formal qualification, and some are fully-qualified teachers of other subjects.
• Candidates should have, as a minimum entry requirement, a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education e.g. ‘A’ levels or the equivalent. If you intend to seek employment in TEFL, you should also have a degree as this level of education is a requirement for all teachers working in schools, such as Studio Cambridge, which are accredited by the British Council.
• You should be at least 20 years of age. If you are aged 18 or 19 years, you will be considered only if you are well qualified in other respects.
• You must also be a native-speaker, or near native-speaker (C2 level), of English. It is essential to have a high level of fluency and accuracy in both spoken and written English, as without this you would be unable to discharge your duties as a teaching professional. EFL teaching requires not only the clarification and explanation of specific language points but also the writing of reports and the correction of students’ written work.
We are confident that you will find the course stimulating and rewarding. You will have the support of dedicated and committed tutors with long EFL careers both in the UK and abroad. Besides being professional trainers with experience in planning, co-ordinating and leading intensive teacher-training courses, our tutors are experienced EFL teachers.
More than just a course, CELTA at Studio Cambridge will help you prepare for the whole experience of teaching EFL, whether at home or abroad.
