We are a community of people who have been set free to follow God’s call in mission. Thousands of people from all walks of life are part of Church Mission Society – praying, learning and acting together in pursuit of that call.
We believe every Christian – and ultimately every person – is called to join in God's mission and has the potential to bring challenge, change, hope and freedom to the world. We all have a part to play.
History
Our story began more than 200 years ago with a group of Christians whose hearts were stirred to put their call into action. This group included people like William Wilberforce, John Venn, and John Newton. Together they worked to abolish the slave trade, they fought for the rights of oppressed people at home and they launched out on dangerous seas to share Jesus with the world. The effects of their efforts – as well as the work of thousands of men and women who have followed in their footsteps – are still seen and felt across the globe today.

Gap years with Church Mission Society
Are you looking for an opportunity to spend between four months and a year overseas serving God? Do you want to see the world but also invest in making it better? A gap year with Church Mission Society could be the answer.
We have a number of gap year placements around the world working alongside our long term partners so whatever time you give will be spent investing into something that will continue long after you return home.
Who is CMS looking for?
We are looking for people who are adventurous and want to be challenged in their faith. We are not promising an easy year but we can guarantee that you will not return the same. If you are connected to a local church or youth group and are prepared to learn from the people you will meet then please get in touch!
Where will I go on a gap year?
We have gap year placements in several countries. Here’s a taste of what’s on offer...
- caring for children in an orphanage in Argentina
- working with people with disabilities in Ecuador
- children’s work with the church in Uganda
- community development in Kenya
- working with girls at risk in Brazil
- teaching English in Egypt
- youth work in Peru
How do I apply?
Our selection process begins when we receive an enquiry form from you. We will take up two references and invite you in for an interview. At the interview you will also meet with our regional managers and personnel officers responsible for the area you are interested in going to. If selected then we will ask you to sign an agreement and give us a cheque for £350 that covers a contribution to our 12-day residential induction course, health clearance, a DBS check and a debrief day when you return.
