Between 2000 and 2002, eight Wildlife Rescue Centers have been established in Indonesia to stimulate and assist law enforcement of illegal protected wildlife trade, and to facilitate the placement of confiscated animals. This was part of the implementation of CITES, which states that each signatory country has the commitment to establish animal rescue centers (Resol. Conf. 9.10).
Cikananga covers an area of 14 hectares and professional facilities have been constructed on site: a large animal clinic, office and supporting animal facilities. With an area of 14 Hectares and a total of 3,750 animals rescued, PPSC was the largest wildlife rescue center in Indonesia, and had a leading position in Indonesia’s wildlife rescue programs.
The center is proud to be currently one of the largest wildlife rescue centers worldwide and strives to obtain international standards, both in professionalism as well as animal welfare.
The mission
PPS Cikananga is to support the government of Indonesia to save and conserve wildlife protected in a professional manner, and of benefit to the local communities. The main activity of our center is to provide for facilities and man power to facilitate confiscated wild animals and re-introduction to their habitats.
Other activities include: rescuing of wild animals, maintaining of wild animals which are evidence for law suits, rehabilitation of wildlife, conservation awareness and education programs, conservation and wildlife trainings, and awareness & education programs. Cikananga opposes any collaboration with institutions which exploit animals. Updates on our work can be found in the News section.
The vision
Cikananga aims to become an internationally accredited wild animal rescue center, capable to provide care and rehabilitation for rescued Indonesian wildlife and to enable repatriation of Indonesian animals from abroad.
The objectives
Aims to assist the government in an effort to rescue and conserve Indonesian wildlife and the habitat and also to encourage and enhance the efforts of law enforcement towards animal rescue. In the activities Cikananga Animal Rescue accommodates, trains and cares for the confiscated animal from the community who then released to the wild.
Volunteer
Do you want to work with wildlife in one of the most extensive Wildlife Rescue Centers of its kind? Or are you looking for an internship location as a student biology, conservation or similar? We have been welcoming volunteers and students from all around the world for a true wildlife experience. Your help makes a true difference for the animals at Cikananga!
The program is open for travelers, students and other individuals who want to work with wildlife and want to help animals that have become victim of the wildlife trade or habitat loss. Through our volunteer and intern program we get valuable support at the center and provide an opportunity for the volunteers to experience wildlife. We’re located about 180km south of Jakarta and different options to travel to us (private or public) are possible.
Volunteering tasks at the center include food preparation and feeding, cage cleaning and maintenance, making and providing enrichment, behavioural observations and teamwork with keepers and other volunteers
It is also possible to help with education activities as local schools visit us from time to time, medical work (also for intern-assingments), and if the opportunity presents itself you can help with confiscation or releases of the animal. It should be noted that you are not allowed to handle any of the animals or to enter any of the facilities without the supervision of our staff. For the welfare of the animals we apply a strict no-physical-contact-policy.
We try to keep pricing affordable: We firmly believe that an experience with wildlife should be in reach of everyone who wants to learn about wildlife, international and local. The small profit we make from the program enables us to pay the keepers, maintain the facilities and provide (medical) care for the animals.
You will be working with our volunteer coordinator, other volunteers, interns and Indonesian keeper team for six days per week from 7 am to 4 pm. The accommodation are two wooden dormitories with a private corner for every volunteer or intern, and a large cantina with a spectacular view over the rice fields.
