Community in Action is actively seeking volunteers from all over the world to come to the Complexo de Alemão and teach ESL classes to students who live in one of Rio de Janeiro's largest favela communities.
Community in Action is a non-governmental organisation founded in 2004 by Zak and Luiza Paster. The ultimate goal of CIA is to provide a platform for social entrepreneurs who want to promote sustainable living and soften the blow of extreme gentrification by using local resources and equipping favela residents with the knowledge and skills necessary to raise the quality of life for future generations. After the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, this is a fantastic time to get involved, undergo a transforming experience, and work with Community in Action to support a more sustainable community in a beautiful and culturally rich country.
Basic Portuguese is a requirement but no prior teaching experience is needed. The staff at Community in Action will be sure to team up with you to create the best plan of action that fits both your needs and the residents of the favela. There is an onsite location, a house built specifically for Community in Action volunteers to touch base. Rosangela Maria dos Santos is the Administrative Manager who helps to support volunteers at this location, and she is a resident of Complexo do Alemao.
If you are looking for a life-changing experience, one that is relevant and in high demand of volunteers, grad students, gap year students, and social entrepreneurs, then we want to hear from you!
