You will be working with small groups of very enthusiastic and eager young people, all keen to improve their English communication skills. They will have volunteered for these extra lessons and you will never find a problem with their motivation and discipline. You will be provided with all teaching materials which have been designed by UK and Ethiopian teachers to be simple to use yet highly effective for your students. The local project coordinators will be on hand to provide plenty of help and support in using these materials before you begin teaching. 

Aside from the teaching placements, this project also focusses on computer training / support and sports coaching programmes. You do not need detailed computer expertise here but a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and the internet is important. This work will take you to various schools, checking on the new computers there and helping the enthusiastic yet rather nervous teachers - and some of the more senior students - to become more skilled at using common software packages. Sports coaching may also take you to a number of different local schools, talking to the teachers about their current sports activities, setting up some keen student teams and helping them with their techniques. You may also like to organise inter-school sports tournaments while you are there. 

During your stay, you will have the opportunity to get to know both the teachers and students in the schools and offer them any extra interests or skills you may have. You will be welcomed at every turn by smiling and enthusiastic people - we cannot emphasise this enough! Whatever you decide, you are sure to gain huge satisfaction from helping and inspiring these underprivileged children whilst significantly enhancing your own skills and experience.

The main working week will be from Monday to Thursday with Friday reserved for participation in other community activities to give you a flexible and wide ranging experience. Those with the right skills may even find themselves working in the local teaching hospital!
