Wildlife Volunteer Expedition in Costa Rica

Location : Costa Rica, Kekoldi
Duration: 2 weeks to 3 months
Approx Costs: 2000 to 3000+ £ Pound (UK)

Join a team of international participants in Cahuita National Park on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Your hands on work will contribute to the long-term management and conservation of this stunning rainforest reserve.

Live in the heart of the jungle sourrounded by the natural beauty of Cahuita's rainforest-kind Caribbean beaches. You'll get to hike the jungle trails while conducting biodiversity surveys, walk along the beach looking for evidence of sea turtles during turtle nesting season, check camera traps for footage of Jaguars and explore the rainforest canals, noting important aquatic bird species.

Not only does this program offer you the opportunity to get involved in ongoing conservation efforts, but you will also be provided with the training and experience to grow professionally by mastering both transferable and technical skills. These include teamwork, intercultural communication, and best practices for recording biodiversity data.

  • Live and work at a research station in the middle of a Costa Rican national park.
  • Observe Costa Rican wildlife species in their natural habitats, including sea turtles on the Caribbean beach, and monkeys, neo-tropical birds, and amphibians in the caponies above rainforest canals.
  • Visit an incredibly jaguar-dense area and one of the only locations in the world where jaguars are known to prey on adult sea turtles.
  • Explore the rainforest by canoe and walk the pristine Caribbean beaches.
  • Learn biodiversity survey techniques and gain real field experience.
  • Undertake turtle nesting surveys and monitor nesting sites during turtle nesting season.
  • Contribute to jaguar research by setting up and checking camera traps in the rainforest.

Costs / Benefits

Since we opened our doors in 1998, we have spent over 65% of all funds directly on our projects. It is our mission to support field operations in the long term. Rather than abandon programs that recruit fewer volunteers we strategically invest from our fully staffed sites to help maintain our presence across the globe. The remaining 35% that is not directly invested in our programs covers the cost of volunteer recruitment, the operations of our head office.

GVI Wildlife Volunteer Expedition in Costa Rica Reviews

Great experience

I was a 6 weeks volunteer in Jalova, Costa Rica in 2019.  It was my first experience as a volunteer and I had a really good time ! I learned so much about conservation and wildlife species 🐆🐢🕊 The staff members were very friendly, passionate, always around and happy to help. The interns and volunteers were very nice and devoted. The base was beautiful within the jungle and just next to the beach ! We did many incredible surveys walking along the beach at night and day, walking through the forest or even on boats! I'm looking forward to my next trip with GVI and I definitely recommend to anyone 😊
