ISLA supports FCDE's community development work by placing, training and supporting individuals and groups who share our vision of creating positive impact in developing world communities.
Our Mission
ISLA builds upon the work of its parent organization, the Foundation for Community Development & Empowerment (FCDE), by providing opportunities for intrepid humanitarians, social entrepreneurs and change-makers to work shoulder to shoulder with the most dedicated community development leaders in our partner communities.
Our Vision
ISLA works to identify impoverished regions that have the drive, desire and basic tools to make positive, lasting change within their communities. By providing technical training, appropriate short-term personnel and seed funds, ISLA will become a partner and catalyst in making long-term positive changes within our host communities.
Training
Program participants initiate their FCDE experience with a week of intensive training. This orientation includes trainings on safety competencies, cross-cultural communication, local health issues and strategies for community immersion. ISLA staff are on-hand to support the intern throughout their program.
Safety
FCDE continues to provide personal support for participants’ safety throughout their time in the program. This is provided through site visits, meetings with the participant, contacts with the participant’s host agency and phone/e-mail contact. FCDE utilizes an incident reporting system that provides the US-based staff with immediate feedback on serious issues and regular reporting on non-emergent safety, behavioral and health issues.
