Intiwawa is a young NGO that works with children of all ages on the outskirts of Arequipa, one of Peru's biggest and most beautiful cities. If you come to volunteer with us you can choose between various projects to get involved in depending on your skills and preferences.
Projects
The main project, tareas, involves welcoming up to 60 kids aged 6 to 14 to the Intiwawa house every afternoon, in San Isidro on the outskirts of Arequipa, providing a safe place for them to do their homework and enjoy being kids. As a volunteer you help kids with their homework, organise games when they are finished,and give them a nutritious meal.
Alternatively we also have volunteers who help in the day-care centre in the same village in the morning, supporting a teacher with children aged 3 to 5.
You can teach english or give computer classes twice a week in a primary school in Arequipa.
We also have intercultural projects on the weekend, which involves travelling to villages out of town, Coporaque which is in the colca Canyon, and Salinas, staying the night with a family and teaching local kids about other cultures, teaching them about their rights and also doing english classes.
Depending on the time of year you come you may also be involved in temporary projects such as exhibitions, excursions, holiday festivities and sports tournaments.
We are always ready for change, improvement and new ideas which are always welcome, you can even start your own project here at Intiwawa.
Volunteer Information
Intiwawa is wholly reliant on the work of volunteers to carry out our different projects. You will be working with volunteers from all around the world as well as more permanent Peruvian volunteers.
The most important requirements we ask of volunteers are motivation, engagement and a strong sense of commitment. As well as this, we ask you to stay for a minimum of 3 months, and volunteers must be 18 years or older and have at least conversational spanish (otherwise working with the kids can be very hard!)
Volunteering is completely free, the way it should be, and we will help you find accomodation in Arequipa, whether it be in the volunteer house or in one of the hostels that Intiwawa has long standing links with. Accomodation included, we suggest the cost of living here is about $400 per month, depending on you!
