The medieval squares and buildings of Old Town remain perfectly preserved and staggeringly beautiful to behold. Krakow was one of the first 12 sites named on the UNESCO heritage list in 1978 and it isn't difficult to see why.
Once the official capital of Poland, Krakow has surrendered its political responsibilities to Warsaw and has now taken on the role of “fun auntie” – the one who takes you for pizza and beer at Aqua e Vino whilst your mum stays home to wash your dirty laundry. And it’s a role it plays well – offering more bars per square kilometre than anywhere else in the world, if legend is to be believed (and I think if we’re going to let the chakra slide, we can go along with this one).
Despite its beauty on the surface, there is much of Krakow to be enjoyed by taking a trip underground. The hundreds of cellar bars along the streets of Sweska and Florianska offer a Bacchanalian paradise – beneath the pavements of the city, time loses all meaning and you start to call the shots. If you’re still drinking, you can be sure your money will form a handy door wedge to stop these bars from closing.
Impossible to experience in one visit, we can’t wait to go again: so why not join us?
