Emerging economies like those of Zanzibar and Tanzania in general require people living in poverty to engage themselves in contributing towards economic growth; it is the only manner in which economic growth will reflect upon the lives of those engaged in it. We recognize that sustainable poverty reduction requires people living in poverty to contribute to and benefit from economic growth while having access to quality basic social services such as education, health and legal services.
Governments have made tremendous efforts in alleviating poverty, opening up new opportunities, creating stable environments for its citizens to engage in poverty alleviation, but often enough these people are reluctant or passive to seize these opportunities for obvious reasons. JIVA therefore advocates towards revamping the situation, by raising awareness, capacity building, providing the communities with relevant knowledge and practical skills that will consequently impact them to become proactive enough to benefit from the economic growth.
Acknowledging the fact that Zanzibar is one of the top tourist destinations in Africa, most of its tourists arrange for volunteering in social works as part of their travel packages, while others visit Zanzibar for volunteering works only. Now JIVA works to; recruit and host volunteers, plan program and schedules according to our Association’s objectives and the noble desire of the potential volunteers, it is our beliefs that these volunteers will work with us in creating effective solutions with desired local impact.
JIVA’s primary effort is to support and improve the education and skills as well as health statuses of the people of Zanzibar and other aspects of life that impact daily lives of the people, these volunteers will work in local health centers, will teach different languages, Computer and business skills and other appropriate technical skills in the fields of agriculture and tourism. We also provide an opportunity for volunteers to work in local sober houses and orphanages where they will be taking care of those people residing is such houses.
We also work with Local and International Community Partners to support local development and boost resource utilization that enable local residents to achieve a healthy lifestyle and sustainable livelihood by proposing, designing, and executing different projects and fund raising accomplish the proposed projects.
