L’AFRIKANA was started in 2013 by a group of refugees after receiving training and material support from JRS DRC and UNHCR. The name L’AFRIKANA was adopted to reflect the idea of self-help among African refugees living in Kenya through cloth making.
Despite facing many challenges, the determination of the founders and members (all refugees) revived and rebranded L’AFRIKANA in April 2023, expanding its vision and mission.
L’AFRIKANA is a registered refugee-run community-based organization aimed at empowering fellow refugees and the local communities living with them. We believe that the needs of refugees and less privileged individuals are best understood and addressed by the refugees themselves. Involving refugees in finding solutions to their challenges lightens the global burden of refugee service delivery and enhances the impact of these services on the community.
L’AFRIKANA seeks to be a transformative channel through which refugees can actively solve their problems, contribute to their welfare, and promote social and economic development in their host nation, Kenya.
