This life-changing project was created with the goal of helping to improve the education of children and youth of El Porvenir. Sadly, the Honduran education system is largely ineffective. Classes are too large and teachers routinely lack proper training and adequate supplies. The result being that many Honduran children, particularly those in rural areas, simply drop out by the time they reach the third grade.
In an effort to encourage and instil a love of learning and success in school, this program provides a variety of extra-curricular educational enrichment and healthy living classes to children and teens in the stunning beachside town of El Porvenir. Originally conceived as a program to encourage bilingual literacy in both English and Spanish, the program now also includes tuition in computers, math, creative arts and sports.
Volunteers on this wonderful project work in small groups at one of three locations around the community, all within easy walking distance from the volunteer houses. There are sessions for both elementary age children (grades 1-6) and also for young teens, and the program operates Monday - Thursday in the morning and afternoon, as well as on Friday mornings. Volunteers are well supported with an on-site project manager facilitating planning and preparation for all classes and activities.
Goals of this Project:
- Provide free education life skills lessons to the children and youth of El Porvenir
- Improve the future prospects of some of El Porvenir’s most impoverished youth, and help them to break the poverty cycle
- Expose marginalized youth to a whole new world of education and help them discover a love for learning
- Expose participating children and volunteers to new people and cultures and enable cross-cultural understanding
