This essential program plays an important role in helping women who have been disenfranchised and discriminated against, even in this day and age. Sadly, there are countless women in India who have experienced physical, sexual or emotional abuse. Living in a male-dominated ‘classist’ society, many women in India (especially those of ‘lower social status’) are illiterate and lack the opportunities to develop this and other fundamental skills. However, the fight for equality starts with support and education. Love Volunteers works with several non-governmental organizations in Delhi to provide work opportunities for international volunteers to help support these women with informal training in skills such as written and spoken English, beauty therapy, computing, sewing, embroidery and knitting (as applicable to volunteer’s skills and experience). Love Volunteers will help women gain the kind of exposure and independence they need. Volunteers work in various centers set up by local non-governmental organizations working for women’s development, focusing on the development of women and young girls living in the poorer urban areas (the slums) in Delhi and surrounding areas. These centers provide counseling and help women by providing adult literacy classes, computer and IT training, and guidance on income generating activities.
Goals of this Project:
- Provide essential teaching and support to vulnerable girls and women
- Improve the future prospects of young women and girls who have been discriminated against
- Give impoverished women and girls a quality education, compassion and a sense of hope
- Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike.
