This essential education program supports children in the under resourced, yet fundamental, area of preschool education in Sri Lanka.
This program is available in kindergartens in three areas, Badulla, Galle and Wattala. Volunteers may choose which location they wish to participate in this program, each site offering so much in terms of sights to see and experiences to enjoy. Early childhood education is sadly a seemingly forgotten area in Sri Lanka’s education system, lacking direction and guidelines, funding and enough quality teaching staff.
This program provides volunteers with the opportunity to share their support, knowledge and skills with those children in need, helping to shape lives and ensure children get the best start. It is essential that volunteers are enthusiastic and flexible as this program needs motivated volunteers who love caring for children and are willing to dedicate themselves to a number of tasks to enable the successful running of the kindergartens.
Goals of this Project:
-
Provide education and support to Sri Lankan preschool children
-
Improve the future prospects of the children of Sri Lanka
-
Expose non-English speakers to native English speakers in order to improve pronunciation and conversational skills
-
Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both students and international volunteers alike
Start Dates
This project is available year-round and programs start every SATURDAY. Volunteers can choose to participate for periods ranging from 1 week to 12 weeks. Longer stays can be arranged directly with the local team, but will be subject to availability and individual visa conditions. Spaces on this project are limited and therefore subject to availability. Early booking is recommended.
Requirements
Love Volunteers welcomes all those 18 years and over who wish to assist in the development of Sri Lanka's next generation. While this highly rewarding project does not require participants to have a background in the field of childcare, as there are many ways you can assist, volunteers with suitable education, qualifications or experience are highly sought after. Regardless, a volunteer’s individual role can often be tailored to suit their particular skills and interests. Ideally, volunteers on this project will have at least a basic knowledge of the local language in order to communicate effectively with staff and students, though this is not a pre-requisite. All applicants must of course display a genuine willingness to help, show drive and initiative, and bring a positive 'can-do' attitude. If this sounds like you, we want you on the team!
