Located in Ocotepeque in western Honduras, near the El Salvador and Guatemala borders, My Bilingual School is the only fully bilingual school in the area and serves students from preschool to 8th grade. Spanish, natural science, social studies, math, and art are taught by local Honduran teachers, and English classes including phonics, reading, grammar, and spelling are taught by volunteers from all over the world. You do not need to have experience teaching to volunteer, you just need to be a fluent English speaker, love kids, and be willing to work hard and be patient! Room and board and 3 meals a day are provided, and volunteers stay in a volunteer house just blocks from the school. It is also a great way to improve your Spanish!
Volunteers' work may vary, depending on the current needs of the school--how many students are enrolled and how many volunteers the school has at the moment . Volunteers could teach any of the four areas of English given at the school--phonics, reading, grammar, and spelling--to any of the grades at the school, from preschool to 8th grade. School runs from 6:45am to 1pm, but volunteers' schedules can vary, according to the volunteer's preference and the needs of the school.
Additionally, Ocotepeque is located about 10 minutes from the El Salvador border and about 50 from the Guatemala border, and there are many tourist attractions in the area where volunteers often travel to, including the Mayan ruins at Copan, famous church at Esquipulas, Guatemala, the Pacific coast of El Salvador, and more.
