Our Goals
To provide a tranquil, stable respite from the impoverished lives of needy Guatemalan children, and offer physical, artistic and cultural programs so that they have the opportunity to experience alternate positive environments where they play, learn and grow.
The children we host are referred to Niños del Lago from existing social programs such as orphanages, homes for abused and abandoned children, homeless shelters and other agencies working to improve the lives of the most endangered children in Guatemala, those who have inherited the fallout of over 37 years of civil war and social upheaval.
An Invitation
As you travel upon your own path, you are invited to join us as a donor, counselor or volunteer. We invite you to participate in our mission to save the hearts and minds of children who are living in extreme poverty. Please donate all you can and come and get involved in this beautiful ‘heart work’ which helps to heal the heart of Guatemala, her children.
Volunteer Opportunities
Senior Camp Counselor
Medical training/experience is a plus, and a heart filled with compassion is imperative!
Must speak intermediate-level Spanish and enjoy working with children.
Junior Camp Counselor
Children are the best teachers for other children. With this in mind, young people are invited to apply for one of the limited positions offered as Junior Camp Counselor. Junior Camp Counselors are willing to dedicate the majority of their time helping young campers accomplish tasks and achieve goals.
General Volunteer Opportunities
We welcome volunteers who are willing to assist in the office, kitchen, workshop, laundry, gardens, and/or provide general maintenance at the camp. Help with supervisory duties (with Senior Camp Counselors) in art classes, at play, on hikes and/or in the dining hall. If you are willing to volunteer for short or long periods, if you speak some Spanish and can spare some time, we will be happy to hear from you!
Volunteers with Special Skills
During the camp season, we seek volunteers who are experts in the following fields:
* RNs and Practical Nurses
* General Equipment Mechanics and Craftspeople
* Art and Physical Education Teachers (work with Senior Camp Counselors)
* Musicians, Dancers, Singers, Actors and Mimes (teach and perform)
If you have a specialty you would like to share with our campers, please write and let us know your area of interest. You might be able to provide a special program for our campers.
