Medicine volunteers are placed at a teaching hospital in Cape Coast, which provides an excellent back drop for learning and improving your skills in medicine and healthcare.

The hospital has a number of different departments in which you can work, such as A&E, gynaecology, paediatrics and general surgery. Volunteers can choose to focus on one speciality or rotate around departments.

Your role as a volunteer will depend on your level of experience and skill. For unqualified volunteers, the role tends to be observational, but it is a great opportunity to learn through shadowing doctors and helping out in simple, practical ways. Those with more experience may have a more active role.

Volunteers also take part in regular medical outreach work in local villages or orphanages, helping to treat minor injuries, providing basic health checks, and providing healthcare education. Volunteers wishing to specialise in outreach work can join our Public Health programme.

We also welcome professionally qualified doctors and nurses for volunteering placements in Ghana. These placements allow you to put your skills and expertise to the best use through assisting with the treatment of patients as well as exchanging knowledge and ideas with the local staff.
