Costa Rica boasts extensive biodiversity as well as attractive and interesting landscapes, attracting eco-tourists from all over the world. Our Conservation project is located in the Barra Honda National Park which is home to some of the most unique opportunities for those who are interested in ecology or wildlife conservation.
Set in a tropical environment with 42 underground caves, Barra Honda is the perfect location for any wildlife enthusiast. Volunteers get involved with mapping trails and rivers, protecting scarlet macaw nesting sites, maintaining park trails, and conducting wildlife research through the use of automatic sensor cameras, butterfly traps and bat censuses.
The main aim of the project is to help ensure that the beautiful and diverse natural resources of Costa Rica are not destroyed. Currently over 25% of Costa Rica is devoted to the conservation of plants and wildlife - more than any other country in the world! Eco-tourism has become very important too, bringing in over one billion US$ per year. However, as tourism becomes a major industry, the risk of environmental damage increases.
