Day 4 – Natadola Bay and Likuri Island: Live like Robinson Crusoe
Wake up to a resort breakfast before we head out for a day of island bliss and intriguing history. We will make our way by boat cruise to the picturesque “Robinson Crusoe Island”, or Likuri island, to enjoy its tranquil blue lagoon, long white sand beach, swaying palm trees and coral reef fringe. With a history dating back more than 3500 years, locals have long considered this a sacred spot. The day is ours to explore and play both in the water and on land. Snorkel the vibrant reef, paddle the sea kayaks, or sip on a fresh coconut as you soak up some sun.
For lunch we will enjoy the delicious local flavours of a traditional Fijian ‘Lovo’ barbeque, where succulent pieces of chicken, fish, and pork are carefully wrapped in woven palm fronds and banana leaves before they are cooked in a fire pit of hot rocks, along with staples of Fijian cuisine such as ‘dalo’, ‘cassava’ and wild yams. As our feast cooks, brave locals will demonstrate their skill for walking on fire which legend says was originally gifted to them by a magical eel. The ritual chants and traditional dances of this unique ceremony mix with the ocean breeze for a mesmerising experience.
Following our filling lunchtime feast, there is the chance for more island explorations with a juggle walk. Our local medicine-man guide will help us to learn about the area’s natural ecology before we visit an excavation site where ancient pottery was discovered.
After a full day connecting to the island’s traditions and landscape, we will make our way back to our jetty by boat before turning in for a restful night’s sleep at our resort.

Fiji is a vibrant land of blue-green lagoons, rich rainforests and thousands of kilometres of white sand beaches ringing over 300 islands drawing visitors from around the world. The Mamanuca Environment Society (MES) is a small but passionate group, formed in 2001, by local resorts and tour operators who were concerned about damage being done to the ecosystems of the Mamanuca Region. With a strong commitment to protecting the stunning marine and terrestrial environments, this proactive society operate environmental awareness projects that specifically target behavior change through educational programs and implementation of best practice policies.
Covering more than 200,000 kilometres of ocean, the warm tropical waters of Fiji are home to a colourful collage of undersea creatures, including four different types of marine turtle. Internationally recognised as a species of conservation concern, all marine turtles are experiencing serious threats to their survival. It is estimated that the survival rate of a marine turtle is only one in every thousand due to destruction of their natural habitat and breeding grounds. As more turtle breeding and nesting grounds are being discovered in the Mamanuca Island, MES has undertaken a Turtle Conservation Project.
The donation component of this trip also goes towards supporting MES’s Environmental Education Program. This conservation program aims to educate and engage students in Years 6-8 from three local schools through various practical activities that help students better understand the interconnectivity of the region’s unique ecosystems. Your contribution will go towards assisting the MES team in preparing awareness materials as well as purchasing beach cleaning equipment, planting tools and coastal tree seedlings.
