Volunteer programme
In 1996 the Sri Lankan Youth Society began benefiting from help from foreign volunteers.
Teaching Projects
Volunteers have over the past 6 years offered students at the centre the chance to learn English from native speakers. English-speaking skills greatly increase a Sri Lankan's chances of gaining employment. The society has witnessed that students will find employment after just 3 months of learning from volunteers.
Volunteers also offer Sport Coaching to students at the centre.
Orphanage Project:
Volunteers work in two orphanages in Colombo. The orphanages house between 50-150 children aged between 1-18 and rely on charitable donations. However, due to lack of funds, standards at the orphanages are often compromised in order to accommodate more children. This means that they are under staffed and volunteers over the years have made a great difference by offering the children extra curricular activities.
Playing with the children is a great opportunity for them to learn English whilst they have fun. It is surprising how much English the children pick up from just having volunteers around them, often learning phrases that, perhaps, they shouldn't!
