In Ireland, we’ve helped over 3,300 children from disadvantaged communities to improve their literacy skills and we’ve trained over 4,500 volunteer mentors to support them.
We have also directly supported over 12,000 children in India, Zambia and Kenya and trained over 1,200 Suas volunteers to work as teaching assistants in some of the worlds most marginalised, under-resourced communities.
Volunteer in Ireland
To date, we’ve helped over 3,300 children from the most disadvantaged communities in Ireland to improve their literacy skills through one-to-one mentoring and learning materials. Last year, the average rate of reading progress for the children we supported was 250%. With your help, we believe we can reach 10,000 children in the most disadvantaged schools in Ireland over the next three years. Volunteers are at the heart of what we do, working one-to-one with children in disadvantaged schools. Our volunteers say there is no better feeling in the world than the sense of fulfillment that comes from seeing a child make progress.
Volunteer in India, Kenya or Zambia
Some summers last a few weeks, a summer with Suas will last a lifetime. Wherever you are placed as a Suas volunteer, a piece of you will remain there long after you have returned home. You will never forget the experience that you will have, or the people you will meet. By applying you will get to support the education of children in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities. 8 week volunteering placements are available and no previous teaching experience is required.
Become a teaching assistant
Since 2002 the Suas has trained and sent over 1,100 young people to India, Kenya and Zambia to work alongside our partner schools and organisations as teaching assistants. Our volunteers come from a wide range of disciplines with many going on to use the skills and experiences they’ve gained to enhance their careers and to continue making positive social change.
Become a coordinator
The Suas International Volunteer Coordinator role is a rewarding, fantastic way for you to develop your leadership and teamwork skills. As a Coordinator, you’ll manage a diverse young team of volunteers, work with inspiring staff and develop skills within challenging environments in India and Zambia. Coordinators attend three specially tailored Preparation Weekends – receiving training in areas such as leadership, conflict resolution and team development from Suas experts. You will then lead teams of Suas Volunteers on placement for six or ten weeks during the summer.
