SKIP is a charity working with disadvantaged families in an impoverished district of the city of Trujillo, Peru. Our holistic program focuses on the educational, economic, emotional and social development of each child and family. It is our aim to foster the capacity of children and families to be the principal agents of change in their own lives.

Education Department

There are over 300 children between the ages of four and eighteen years old currently enrolled in the education programme, which makes it the largest department in SKIP. We aim to maintain an exciting, stimulating and engaging learning environment. Our aim is not to replace the local education system, but rather supplement it. Following a curriculum designed especially for the children at SKIP, we provide classes in subjects such as reading comprehension, Math and Computing.

The English teaching programme:

Our English Programme consists of between five and ten volunteers. We conduct lessons in classes at the SKIP centre, and also in local public schools.

We take a dynamic approach to teaching the children; lessons are creative, activity-based and interactive. There are lots of games and songs to keep the children engaged so they can enjoy learning in a fun environment. The English team works together with the Peruvian public school teachers to implement these teaching practices in the classroom.

The Library Programme:

Our Library functions as a library, drop-in centre, homework club and short-term child-care. What makes it so special is that it is voluntary. Kids turn up as and when they want to. It can be the difference between being at home alone looking after even younger siblings or having a safe fun place to do homework, read and engage in educational play. It is a place where our working parents know their children will be safe and supported every afternoon. It offers child-cares support for mothers who attend our educational or skills workshops at SKIP. The library is open to the 300+ primary and secondary children who access SKIP. Every day we see kids build their confidence in reading and writing and maths and it is incredibly rewarding.
