It was founded to continue the work of Spanish environmental agency, Proyecto Ambiental Tenerife, some twenty years ago and runs the volunteer programme on the island’s whale watching boats, one of the largest whale watching centres in the world.

The AWF runs cetacean educational awareness, research and conservation programmes. Its volunteers act as ‘Research Guides’ on the whale watching boats. The AWF also works with the tourism industry in Tenerife, Europe’s No. 1 winter destination, promoting cetacean conservation and operates the Visitor Centre in Puerto Colon promoting responsible whale watching and other eco-tourism opportunities on the island. It runs a range of free educational programmes.

Additionally, the AWF collaborates with and provides support for cetacean based projects across the Atlantic Oceans be they of an educational, conservation or research nature. It has just launched the Atlantic Ocean Cetacean Network, (AOCN), and an extensive range of awards and grants aimed at facilitating cetacean  programmes in the region.

Volunteering

Summer volunteers on the whale watching boats will have the opportunities to partake in an extensive range of activities most of which will be free although some of the sporting activities will be provided at great discounts. Activities will range from great treks, all FREE, to cultural excursions, again all FREE, to sporting activities such a diving, surfing, kayaking, canyoning, horse-riding and cycling etc. The AWF volunteer programme runs throughout the year and we lay on additional activities in the Summer months.

Volunteers will have a minimum two days on the whale watching boats and the option of two days of activities, which can also be at weekends. The rest of the week can be either on the whale watching boats, helping our research teams in their work, taking up further activities or simply chilling. This is Tenerife and it is Summer!

Internships, work experience and jobs are also available.
