Summary: You'll work at NGOs and Public Schools. You'll assist the Sports teachers in their regular lessons, introducing your culture and sports specialities from your country. This is an exciting opportunity to also develop your own coaching project, sharing your sports techniques, games played in your country, different styles, anything that can add to the teachers' and students' practice.
The local teacher and coordinator will be there to help you with planning and practicing the lessons. The children are all so eager to learn from the foreign volunteers!
This placement will add substantially to your CV or Résumé.
WORK CONTENT
At the NGOs you are likely to be working with up to 100 children aged 7-15 and you can help coach mainly, but not only, football and tennis. You'll work at different centres during the week with each session lasting 3.5 hours per day.
At the public schools sports lessons are part of the school curriculum. There are approximately 700 students at the schools aged between 6 and 16 years-old. They are all from the local community and don't pay anything to attend the school.
There are approximately 35 children per class and they practice general sports, such as volleyball, basketball, handball and football. Sometimes they practice only one type in the whole week, sometimes more than one type in a day, depending on each teacher’s way of lesson planning.
Some schools still don’t have an indoor court, so sometimes if it's raining, the lessons take place inside the classroom and then students play board games or other activities planned by the teacher.
The period of regular lessons is 4 hours long and children attend either the morning or afternoon sessions. The mornings start at 8.00am and finish at midday and the afternoon session is 1.00pm to 5.00pm.
Sports are taught in the mornings and afternoons on 4 days of the school week, to different groups of children, so the main teacher has in total 32 hours of teaching per week. You can work fulltime – 4 mornings and 4 afternoons – or choose some mornings and some afternoons, if you prefer having more free time to explore the city.
You’ll assist the Sports teacher in regular lessons, introducing your culture, motivating students to learn about it, playing with the children, presenting new possibilities. You are also welcome to develop your own coaching project, being the “main teacher” in this case. Anything that you can contribute to the students’ development and interest in learning is welcome.
