Teach in the amazing Galapagos Islands! You'll generally help the teachers to take English classes as they always need help with preparing lessons, finding new materials such as teaching English songs to the children, and help with practicing conversational English.
You'll also help with organising other activities, including assisting those children who may be slower than others.
The school where you'll work is located in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the island San Cristobal. The school serves the needs of the islands 7,475 inhabitants and comprises a primary and secondary school. Altogether there are around 550 students.
The Primary School is open in the morning and classes start early at 7.15 and finish at 12.30 and in the afternoon, the Secondary School students attend from 1pm – 6.30pm.
Each class has one general classroom teacher who teaches all main subjects and then there are a few specialised teachers in English, Art and Sport who don’t have their own class as instead they rotate around all the classrooms teaching their specialised subject.
You will help the teachers to take English classes as the teachers always need help with preparing lessons, finding new materials such as teaching English songs to the children, and helping with practicing conversational English and volunteers help enormously with the correct English pronunciation.
You will also help with organising other activities including assisting the children who may be slower than others.
If you have an interest in Art, IT, Music or Sport you are more than welcome to help the teachers give these lessons and come up with new ideas.
Keep in mind that even though you can give a preference of age or subject you would like to help with, this volunteer position is a flexible one, and you'll be asked to work where needed.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES:
You may also help out with mini projects at the school. Recently the school garden was improved by volunteers and parents who planted trees and built a play area for children to use during the break. Other mini-projects could include:
• Painting or maintenance of classrooms
• Construction work
• Maintaining the garden and play area
• A sports event
• Painting a mural on a school wall
WORKING HOURS: Your work schedules will depend on how many other volunteers are working in the project at the same time as you. Depending on the ages of the children you would like to teach, you may work Monday to Friday from 7.15am to 12.30pm for Primary school and from 1pm - 6pm for Secondary.
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS: The School is closed for holidays during the last week of September and the first week in October and also March-April.
ACCOMMODATION
You'll fly into Quito in Ecuador, where you will be met and have an overnight stop in the city. The next day you’ll be taken back to the airport for your flight to San Cristobel Island.
Once at San Cristobal, you'll be picked up on arrival and taken to your accommodation and settled in before your induction. Your volunteer work will start on Monday.
Your return flight from Quito to the Galapagos Islands is included in your project price.
During your time on San Cristobel you'll live in a cosy hostel in the island's capital, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The hostel is basic but comfortable and you'll share a room with other volunteers and backpackers. Your room has air-conditioning and a private bathroom and the hostel also has a lovely garden where you can sit and watch the sun set. It also has a well equipped kitchen.
Wi-Fi / Internet: Wi-fi facilities are available on in the lobby, so you are able to Skype and Facebook friends and family..
FOOD: Food is not provided on this project. You can buy provisions at the supermarket (and also take some staple foods, like rice and pasta, with you from Quito) and use the kitchen facilities to cook.
As you are based in the town, there are lots of facilities nearby such as restaurants, bars, supermarkets and ATM machines.
