Teach in stunning Ecuador! You'll assist in a government school with 500 pupils aged 3 to 12. The children come from many different economic backgrounds and family situations. You'll be able to teach English and a wide range of other subjects

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The school has approximately 500 children between the ages of 3 to 12 years old, with 25-30 in each grade. Each class has one general classroom teacher who teaches all main subjects and then there are a few specialized teachers in English, Arts and Sports who don’t have their own class, and instead they rotate around all the classrooms teaching their specialized subject.

You'll mainly work as an assistant. The children will really appreciate any attention you give them! Volunteers are needed to help with the following activities, but this also depends on the initiative you show:

  • English classes, the English teacher always needs help with preparing lessons, finding new materials such as English songs as well as practicing conversational English with volunteers to help pronunciation. The presence of volunteers is highly important, apart from keeping the children’s interest and making the class more active, native English speaking volunteers are also a great support for the teacher, to improve vocabulary, pronunciation skills, and especially in sharing new ideas on how to make the class fun and interesting and change it from being a difficult class for the children to their favourite one!
  • Classroom assistant, all of the teachers need help in their classrooms, preparing lessons, helping with activities, assisting children who are slower than others.
  • Sport/Art/Computer lessons – if you are very interested in these subjects you are more than welcome to help the teachers give these lessons and come up with new ideas.
  • Help during break and playing times with keeping order and engage in recreational activities.

You generally work at the school Mondays to Fridays from 7am to 12:20.

ACCOMMODATION

You'll either stay in a house with other volunteers or you can choose to live with a host family, depending on your preferences/availability. (Staying with a host family does mean a small supplementary fee.)

The Volunteer House is located in a tourist area, 'La Mariscal', near to where all Spanish lessons are held and where there is plenty of nightlife, restaurants and internet cafes. The house has 7 rooms and accommodates 17. There is a large, fully equipped kitchen, a TV room with a DVD player, wireless internet, 2 safety boxes and a garden with hammocks and a BBQ area. All bathrooms have hot water and there is a cleaning lady 5 days a week.

Wi-Fi / Internet is available in the accommodation.

FOOD: Food is not included in this project (unless you choose to live with a host family, when food is provided on Mondays to Fridays.

Living with a host family means that you get to eat, sleep, work, socialise and generally live like an Ecuadorian! Many of our volunteers remain friends with their host families long after they leave Ecuador and in some cases they return to the country later especially to visit their family.

Whichever accommodation you choose, you're sure to enjoy a great stay in Quito!
