OVERVIEW:

People from all backgrounds can participate in drama, developing essential skills by learning to express themselves and gain self -confidence. Theatre can be aimed at children to educate and inform or simply to entertain.

It's difficult to be specific about what you can do with your classes on this project, because it's informal and wide-ranging. Previous volunteers have started drama clubs after school and have produced numerous plays that were performed for students and parents. They have coached the children who were then encouraged to give musical performances ranging from pop and dance to actual musical productions.

Some volunteers have used the medium of drama to help children address some sensitive issues, like bullying, alcohol abuse, and more. Some classes are given over to energising exercises and cheerful singing. The possibilities are endles, but you could assist with the following:

► Organising and putting on drama workshops in various local schools.
► Organising an after-school drama club (and possibly even during lunch break) or drama sessions during school-time for pupils.
► Helping the local school children to put on a small-scale productions so that they can all been involved in some aspect of it.
► Devising and performing educational pieces of theatre (on issues such as bullying) for the school children.
► Alongside the drama, you could also help out with conversational English classes.

PAST VOLUNTEERS SAY:

"We're having a great time ... we teach 'Arts and Culture' which is a combination of drama, the arts and telling the students all about England (education, politics, marriage, laws, health problems and other social issues). Today we took the class outside to do some energising warm-ups and we have spent several lessons discussing the idea of a School Performance (variety show in which they can showcase their talents - whether it be hip-hop dancing, Kwaito singing, comedy sketches or Rapping). It's really a great placement and the teachers are so keen to show us around the area. Knynsa itself is the most beautiful place, I'd move here tomorrow if I found the right paid job!" Caroline Menzies
