China has been opening itself up to the Western world, and as part of this process, recognizes that it needs English as a common international language.
But the recent requirement that every school from primary level upwards must teach English as a core subject is hindered by a shortage of English teachers - particularly outside the big cities of Beijing and Shanghai. There is a great need for people who can speak English fluently.
This program is a great way for you to partake in daily life in China as one of its own, and your contribution of culture and knowledge to life outside of China will also be appreciated, especially to people who have never seen foreigners, your interactions may even help dispel stereotypes locals have!
One of our most rewarding programs, you will have deepened your knowledge of China, its culture, people, language and traditions, and experience first hand the gratitude of the children you teach.
Your Assignment
Your main assignment involves teaching conversational English to children from 6 to 18 years old. You will help children learn the 4 essential English skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in English with more confidence and improve their motivation to learn more.
You will be supplementing what the local teachers do by ‘bringing English alive’, and helping the children enjoy the process of both learning and using English.
'Bringing English alive’ through conversational English means helping Chinese students use English in conversational settings, whether oral (speaking and listening) or written (reading and writing) – through practice, developing fuller comprehension as they do.
Training Period
This program begins with a 3-week cultural + teacher training period stationed in our Guilin center.
Practicum Period
It is then followed by a 4-month (minimum) teaching practicum in a school. This teaching practicum is treated like an internship period, where you will not only gain experience, but also a stipend.
Further Placements
Successful completion of both of the above components will result in you receiving the credentials needed to prolong your current placement, or find other placements.
What benefits will I receive?
- A salary of around 500 Euro per month for your first semester
- School canteen food and furnished accommodation
- 500 Euro bonus for completing your first semester
- Nationally recognized TEFL Certificate after full completion of program
In Western terms, 500 Euros per month may not sound much! However, the cost of living in China is such that you can live quite well on this. Chinese teachers for example typically earn this sum, with head teachers earning about 300 Euros (and unlike you, they also have to pay for their own food and accommodation!).
After your placement period we can guarantee to help you find a paid teaching position if you plan to stay in China. You can expect this salary to be a higher 800 Euros minimum per month, with food & accommodation provided by schools.
