We served the area of Siaya District and neighbouring communities to promote sustainable development, and empower communities through increasing access to information.

UCRC welcomed open-minded, motivated individuals eager to learn from and contribute to small-scale, community-based development initiatives.

International placements, from a few days to two years, were available within a range of programs and activities revolving around issues such as sustainable agriculture, preserving indigenous knowledge, women and youth empowerment, health, human rights, technology transfer, food security, education, and fund raising.

Working with a locally-based Non Governmental Organization offers international volunteers a chance to work closely with the community of Siaya District. Participants got a firsthand look at the obstacles the community faces - what causes them, and how community resources are used to address them.

In addition to the work experience we offered, there was the life experience you gained by living and working in Kenya. Most foreigners visiting Kenya stick to the game parks and beaches. UCRC volunteers live in a community not tailored towards tourists. The food you eat, the songs you hear, the people you meet, all represent the actual way of life.

At UCRC, volunteers gained insight into complex development issues. No classroom, boardroom, or book can teach you the things you will learn first-hand about life and development in Kenya.
