Virutcham Magalir Munnetra Kalzangiam (VMMK-previously known as Virudhunagar Magalir Membattu Kazhagam) is a non-profit organization established by a group of socially concerned Women in the year 1997 and registered under the society’s act of Tamil Nadu.  Secretary of VMMK Ms. K. Vijaya has been a long-standing social worker in the district and she heads the organization as the Founder and is supported by a core and volunteer team who are from the communities it strives to serve. This includes young girls and boys in their youth in the staff team including a few from MSM and TG community in different capacities. VMMK in implementing its projects collaborates with a wide range of institutions. It is this collaborative approach and the pool of external advisers/experts that VMMK has access to, have helped in quality delivery of its programmes and helped in it achieving the award for the best NGO in Tamil Nadu at the State Level for its contribution to women development from the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 2013. Secretary of VMMK serves in different capacities within the bodies constituted by the district administration and she is also the Vice president in the National Council for Labour (NCL) - a national level trade union.

Main focus of VMMK interventions are on Women, Children, Youth, Transgender and MSM (Men Sex with Men) looking into their livelihood, access to welfare and protection of rights. VMMK has organized 169 women SHGs, 18 Transgender SHGs, 14 SHGs of disabled and 27 SHG’s of Youth.  VMMK to date has organized about 12,350 unorganized sector workers and help them establish a Trade Union. Besides, VMMK has also organized about 1200 MSM and 335 Transgender persons.  2100 Children of these workers are included in various Child welfare projects like, Crèche, Education, Nutrition support, Eradication of Child Labour etc. VMMK is conducting Youth related activities for their economic development and empowerment. 1,540 Youth (including 960 young women) were given vocational training and skill development training. Among them about 285 male youth and 678 young girls have got job employment/self employment with the facilitation of VMMK.

Geographic Focus:

State: Tamil Nadu & More recently VMMK has commenced working in Odisha with the formation of ODI (Odisha Development Initiative) - a network of 22 small and emerging NGO’s in the state.
