If you are open to living / working in a different culture and would like the experience of helping elephants then this project to you! These projects are very hands on, you will get to work in direct contact with adult and baby elephants.
During this program you might be cleaning enclosures, washing and bathing elephants, collecting food and creating a good environment for the elephants to live in. There are more skilled roles available which are perfect if you are seeking vetinary work experience. You will be supervised throughout these placements by local mahoots who care for the elephants, this is also for your own safety and to help you enjoy the best experience possible.
You will be expected to work around 5 hours per day, most of the time this will be outside so be prepared for hot and humid conditions so pack light. There will be free time in the evenings and at weekends, this can be time you can get to know the other international volunteers, local staff, relax, visit nearby places or just get involved in other tasks. This project is also available to combine with other programs and tours.
Location
This projects is in Kaegalle which is around 2 hours drive from Colombo, this area is very picturesq and there are lots of scenic places nearby which you will be able to visit. You might want to spend time visiting a beach, or exploring ancient temples in the nearby city of Kandy.
Eligibility
- To apply you will need to be aged 17 and over
- No previous experience working with animals / elephants is required
- Must be eligible for a Sri Lankan tourist visa
- Good health + a positive upbeat attitude
