Through various projects, the organization has been able to engage 225 girls into acquisition of vocational skills (tailoring, English, computer, business skills, cookery and embroidery) and 580 women into horticultural and beekeeping activities. In total 600 women are enrolled in community banking.
WEECE has been in operation for 15 years. It has worked with local, marginalized women, men and vulnerable youths particularly girls. It is a non-governmental, non-profit making, non-religious, and non-political organization that was established in 1999 by a group of 15 women from the Kilimanjaro region. Its main objective was to bring about gender equality through poverty alleviation.
It seeks to empower women through participation in economic development, education and advocacy. It is the only community based organization in the Kilimanjaro seeking to empower women both educationally and economically. It uses an integrated approach at the grassroots level with the aim of decreasing gender discrimination and poverty.
WEECE strives to provide members especially women in the community with technical information on economic and business development, entrepreneurships, informational and training support in the areas covering social and human rights, legal advice and reconciliation of disagreements with partners.
Through this work, the organization aims to raise consciousness and increase self-confidence among local women by increasing their productivity and directly influencing their decision making on matters concerning their lives.
